Bad sign? Lots of retail vacancy yet construction is booming.
U.S. shopping centers started to rebound this past year for the first time since the recession hit the retail market. The trend is expected to continue with more than half the projected new inventory through 2016 slated for completion this year, according to a report from Cushman & Wakefield. But some fear that this new inventory may pressure the still-recovering market where vacancy rates are elevated and lending remains tight.
